Topper or New Mattress? The Ruler Test, and Using One on the Floor

Nội dung bài viết

A topper fixes a hard surface. It does not fix a sagging one. There is a one-minute test with a ruler that tells you which of the two you have, and it will save you either a wasted purchase or a wasted year of bad sleep.

You have rented a flat here and the bed came with it. It is harder than anything you slept on at home, or it has a dip in the middle from tenants before you. Either way you are lying awake wondering whether to buy a topper or push the landlord for a new mattress.

The answer is not about money. It is about where the problem sits.

A topper is one layer, not a new bed

A topper is a thin pad that lies on the mattress you already have. It softens the surface your shoulder and hip meet every night. Whatever is wrong deeper inside the mattress, it cannot reach.

So the whole decision collapses into one question: is the thing keeping you awake on the surface, or further down?

The ruler test

Lay something long and straight across the mattress — a ruler, a broom handle, the edge of a suitcase — and look at the gap underneath it in the middle.

Firm but flat. The mattress holds you up but gives nothing, so your arm goes numb when you sleep on your side. This is where a topper does its best work: the wadding gives you the sink you were missing, and the support underneath stays. Far cheaper than replacing a bed you do not own.

Slightly dipped. A small gap under the ruler. A topper buys you a few more years, which in a rental is usually all you need.

Dipped like a bowl. We sell toppers and not mattresses, and we will still tell you plainly: this one a topper will not fix. It looks flat when you lay it down, then your back follows the hollow underneath the moment you lie on it. You get about two comfortable weeks and then you are back where you started. Talk to your landlord instead.

Using one on the floor

Sleeping on the floor is ordinary here — it is cooler, and plenty of households nap that way. A topper works as the cushion between your back and a hard floor, and it is the easiest guest bed you can own.

Two things to keep to. Keep the floor dry, and fold the topper up during the day. Floors here are tile, and tile absorbs nothing — the moisture your body puts out overnight has nowhere to go and collects underneath. In this humidity that happens faster than you would expect.

Why the cheap ones sleep hot

A 200,000 đồng topper from an online marketplace and a two-million đồng one look nearly identical in photographs. The difference is the fabric on top, and you notice it on the third night.

The cheap ones are usually polyester: durable, easy to dye, does not crease. Easy fibre to manufacture with. It also barely absorbs anything — polyester's moisture regain is around 0.4%, so your sweat is not drawn into the fibre and released into the air. It stays exactly where your skin meets the cloth. That is why the room can be air-conditioned and your back still damp.

Rayon is made from cellulose, the same family as cotton. Cellulose likes water, so the fibre pulls moisture in and lets it go into the air over time. The face against your skin stays drier.

Our topper cover tests at 51.2% rayon and 48.8% polyester on the Quatest 3 certificate. We are printing that number in the middle of an article about what is wrong with polyester, because both are in there and both are doing a job: the rayon handles moisture at the skin side, the polyester stops the cover stretching out over many washes. It is not that one fibre is good and the other bad — it is where you put each one, and in what proportion.

Rayon has a real weakness: wet, it loses roughly half its strength. That is why the washing instructions ask for a gentle cycle, and why the cover is made to come off rather than being sewn shut.

Test any fabric in one minute

Press the back of your hand flat against the fabric and hold it there for a minute. Lift it off. If the fabric moves moisture, your skin is faintly damp and dries almost at once. If it does not, there is a clear patch of condensation left sitting on the surface.

Do the same on the bedding you already own and compare. No equipment, and more honest than any product description — including ours.

The egg, and what it does not prove

We dropped a raw egg onto a topper from about a metre and a half. It did not break. The video is unedited. The stacked layers absorbed the impact instead of returning it; from that height onto tile or a firm mattress, the egg breaks.

All it shows is that the layers absorb impact. It is not evidence that you will sleep better — that depends on your weight and how you lie. It is a good clip and we will not claim more for it than that.

If you want to look: the toppers ›. Or describe your mattress to us and we will tell you if a topper is the wrong purchase — that answer costs us a sale and we would rather give it than take your money for two good weeks.
