This is the single most useful thing to understand before buying bedding in Vietnam, and it is the reason most expats give up and sleep on whatever came with the apartment.
How Vietnamese beds are sized
Vietnamese mattresses are named by their width in metres. The length is almost always 2 metres (200 cm).
- 1m2 = 120 × 200 cm
- 1m4 = 140 × 200 cm
- 1m6 = 160 × 200 cm
- 1m8 = 180 × 200 cm
- 2m2 = 220 × 200 cm
So when a landlord says "it's a 1m6 bed", they mean 160 cm wide and 200 cm long.
The conversion table

What this table actually tells you
If you come from Europe, Korea or the UK: you are in luck. European, IKEA, Korean and UK Super King sizes were built on the same 200 cm length and the same 140/160/180 cm widths that Vietnam uses. A Korean King and a Vietnamese 1m6 are the same bed. A UK Super King and a Vietnamese 1m8 are the same bed. Your sheets will simply fit.
If you come from the United States: they will not fit properly, and you should know why. American sizes were never built on the metric grid. A US Queen is 152 × 203 cm — 8 cm narrower and 3 cm longer than a Vietnamese 1m6. A US King is 193 cm wide, which sits between our 1m8 (180 cm) and our 2m2 (220 cm), matching neither.
This is not a defect on either side. It is two different measuring traditions meeting in your bedroom.
If you come from Japan: widths match, but Japanese mattresses are usually 195 cm long rather than 200 cm. A 5 cm difference in length is well within what a fitted sheet absorbs.
How much mismatch is actually a problem?
Less than you would think, and this is where the fabric matters.
Our Ice Spandex sheets contain 13.4% spandex and stretch in four directions. A fitted sheet made from stretch fabric tolerates a difference of a few centimetres in a way that a rigid cotton percale sheet does not. Someone with a US Queen mattress usually finds a 1m6 fitted sheet works.
What stretch does not solve is a large gap. If you have a genuine US King, do not buy a 1m8 and hope.
Before you buy anything, measure three numbers
- Width of the mattress, in centimetres
- Length of the mattress, in centimetres
- Depth — how thick the mattress is from top surface to base
Depth is the one people forget, and it is the one that causes a fitted sheet to pop off a corner at 3am. A mattress with a topper on it is considerably deeper than the same mattress bare. Measure it with the topper in place if you use one.
