Bedding Guide for Expats

If you have just moved to Ho Chi Minh City, there is a good chance the bedding you brought with you does not work here. Not because it is poor quality — because it was made for a different climate and a different bed.

Two things surprise almost everyone:

1. The sizes do not match. Vietnamese mattresses are measured by width in metres — 1m6, 1m8 — and are almost always 2m long. A US Queen fitted sheet will not sit properly on a 1m6 Vietnamese bed. A European or Korean set often will. We explain exactly why on our size conversion page.

2. The fabric that felt fine at home traps heat here. Ho Chi Minh City sits around 27–35°C with humidity that rarely drops below 70%. Cotton that breathed beautifully in London or Seoul holds moisture against your back at 2am in Thảo Điền. This is the single most common complaint we hear from new arrivals, and it is a material problem, not a mattress problem.

Who we are

Judy Drap has been making and selling bedding in Ho Chi Minh City for over ten years. We specialise in cooling bedding — sheets, blankets, toppers and pillows built for a tropical climate rather than adapted to it.

Our warehouse and showroom is in An Khánh, District 2 — a few minutes from Thảo Điền, where many of our customers live. You are welcome to come and feel the fabrics before you decide anything. Most people do, and we think that is the sensible way to buy something you will sleep on for years.

What we make

Ice Spandex Tech 2.0 sheet sets — 86.6% polyamide, 13.4% spandex. Built to move heat away from your back rather than hold it. Four-way stretch, so it fits snugly and does not need ironing.
Cooling blankets in the same fabric.
Mattress toppers with a microfibre core and a rayon cover.
Pillows and pillow covers, including a range for children.
Mattress protectors.

Our sheet fabrics are tested to Quatest 3 standards for the absence of formaldehyde and harmful aromatic amines. If you are buying for a child, that certificate is worth asking us about in person.

What we will tell you honestly

We do not believe there is one best fabric. There is only the fabric that suits how you actually live.

Ice Spandex is a synthetic. It releases heat quickly and keeps a flat, tidy surface, and it is what most of our customers choose for the hot months. But if you love the feel of raw natural fibre, or you sweat heavily and want maximum absorbency rather than heat release, cotton or Tencel may genuinely suit you better. We will say so. We would rather you sleep well than buy from us once and regret it.

We do not ship retail orders overseas. Shipping bulky bedding internationally costs more than the bedding, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

WHY VIETNAMESE BLANKETS DO NOT COME APART

Back home your duvet has two parts: a cover you wash, and an insert you swap — thick for winter, thin for summer.

A Vietnamese mền is quilted as one piece. There is no cover to unbutton and no insert to change. For most people arriving here, this is the first small surprise in the bedroom.

The reason is plain enough: the south has no winter. One thin quilt carries you through all twelve months, so there is nothing to swap out. You wash the whole blanket, and because the filling is synthetic it dries in hours rather than over a weekend.

If you would rather keep the duvet system you grew up with, you can still find covers and inserts sold separately in Vietnam — but the choice is much narrower, and most of it is made for the cooler north.

IF IT IS NOT WHAT YOU EXPECTED, SEND IT BACK

Buying bedding online is hard enough at home. Here you are also doing it in a language you may not read, from a shop you have never heard of, and you cannot put your hand on the fabric first.

So here is our side of it. When the parcel arrives, open it and touch the fabric. If it is not what we described, send it back and we refund you. Even if everything is exactly as written and you simply changed your mind, we will still take it back — nobody should be pushed into keeping bedding they do not like. The only condition is that the item has not been used or washed.
